Kids Gift & Reference Books

ROLES:  Art Direction  •  Cover Design  •  Interior Design  •  Editorial Collaboration

During my tenure at National Geographic, I have designed several gift and reference books, ensuring each aligns with its target audience and resonates with readers. Tailoring designs to specific markets helps promote National Geographic’s mission of delivering engaging and informative content across diverse subjects. © National Geographic Kids

Dream Journal: This 144-page journal invites kids to explore the science, history, and culture of dreams while decoding their own. Designed as an interactive write-in journal, it features engaging prompts, intriguing sidebars, and captivating facts. Whimsical line art decorates the pages, while vibrant photos and fun facts add an extra layer of discovery. Each spread is enhanced with colorful abstract or natural backgrounds, creating a serene and inviting aesthetic. A colored ribbon bookmark adds a finishing touch. I designed the cover and art directed the interior. © National Geographic Kids

Luna: This 64-page jacketed gift book invites children to explore the moon through stunning illustrations and photography. To ensure each spread stands out, especially with the predominantly dark backdrops, a rotating color palette was employed to aid readers in seamlessly navigating from section to section. The design is further enhanced with tech-inspired, space-themed aesthetics, and incoporates elements such as futuristic fonts.  © National Geographic

Paws of Courage: This 160-page jacketed gift book features inspiring tales about 22 hero dogs that served in the line of duty and under fire, including military combat, search and rescue missions, police and fire patrol, and more. The book was designed with ample white space, making the running narrative easy to read and navigate. A dog tag theme adorns the cover and repeats inside to introduce each dog. Grunge textures help bring depth to the page. Sidebars use colorful palettes and simple iconography to capture the reader’s eye. Interstitial spreads at the end of each chapter offer a deeper dive into related topics and use a complementary design to visually separate from the rest of the section. © National Geographic

Book of Nature Poetry: This 192-page picture book features a blend of poetry and photography from around the world. As art director,
it was my task to pair together the poems and photography, and to organize the content within each chapter. Combining complementary photos or contrasting images was key to creating a design where each spread was unique in composition, color, and layout. Colorful textures were used to accentuate the photos and add an air of elegance and dimension to the spreads.

Little Kids First Board Book: Frogs:  This nonfiction board book explores how a frog grows up by combing educational text, engaging photos, and colorful graphics in an easy-to-follow format. The book ends with a simple activity for parents to share with their toddlers.
